The purpose of Palliative care training course

Patients with advanced cancer or chronic diseases often experience significant physical and psychological symptoms throughout the disease trajectory. These symptoms may include pain, anorexia, fatigue, anxiety, depression, delirium, and dyspnea. Herein lies the importance of the Palliative care training course. Palliative care is a medical specialty that focuses on the relief of physical, psychological, social, and or spiritual suffering to improve the quality of life of patients with life-threatening illnesses. Palliative care is delivered by specialized interdisciplinary teams, often consisting of physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and other health professionals. Palliative care is an essential component of comprehensive cancer care programs. Patients with cancer can benefit from effective symptom control and management of complications related to their cancer and or its treatments, regardless of the stage of the disease.

Palliative care is a complex aspect of end-of-life treatment, which focuses on providing compassionate medical care and preserving the patient’s dignity throughout the unfolding of a disease. Data from the literature largely confirm the effectiveness of PC and encourage early access of patients to PC as well as the integration of PC into standard care. Nonetheless, national- and international-level data evidence the low referral rate of patients to PC. This may most likely be due to sustainability issues, as PC requires ever more qualified PC specialists for a steadily growing patient supply and dwindling economic resources.  In addition, there is a lack of understanding of the value of palliative care not only among the public and policy makers but also among the health care professionals.

Response to the needs assessment survey which was conducted in 2021, showed that 52% of the participants stated their needs for palliative care training course.

Palliative care training course is designed to enhance the knowledge, skills and attitudes of physician, nurses, allied health worker (psychologist, social worker, and physiotherapist) and pharmacist, who deal with the terminally ill and their families. This course is provided by Jordanian Experts Team for Training and Consultation for all healthcare providers, online with accredited certificates.
